24 Feb 2008 - Bath u8s 8 - Nailsea & Backwell u8s 9

A small plucky squad of under eights showed dazzling speed in attack and excellent defence at Bath last Sunday.

Led maturely from the front by captain Joe Sharps, this little squad gave all their energy against a much larger Bath squad.  Forward Ben Brown adapted his game to the wide pitch and fast conditions and bushed aside defenders for a couple of excellent tries. Scrum Half Luke Johnstone was also pacey and darted in for a try and provided great passes out to Joel Giltrow and Ben Cleeve to add to our scoreline. Dom Wood showed maturity in defence and attack and like the rest of the team, concentrated on his opposite man and the ball

Though Nailsea led 5-2 at the interval, Bath were able to make several changes whilst this small Nailsea squad had to carry on and cope with any injuries. Tired legs allowed Bath to pull a few tries back but the win was greatly helped by Ben Morris and Sam Williams making some try saving tag-tackles.

Man of the match was Will O’Malley, who looked for gaps in the Bath defence and make several try-scoring breaks, and who will captain the side on our next outing.

For the record, in an earlier warm up match, Nailsea also performed excellently against Wootton Basset - all  parents and boys believing we won the game by a clear couple of clear tries despite the referee indicating an 8-all draw. Again a great performance that had all the supporters cheering loudly.
