9 Mar 2008 - Nailsea U14's 15 Taunton U14's 19
This was the day when a fired up Taunton side gained revenge for N&B knocking them out of the Somerset Cup earlier in the season. Taunton kicked off down the slope, with a blustery crosswind, however it was N&B who first went on the attack, building field position through Henry Ivall and Grady Wright before quick hands put winger Troy Atkinson away to cross in the corner. Taunton always looked dangerous and replied with a clever chip over the top, a lucky bounce and a score under the posts to even the scores. N&B once again worked their way back upfield, however an intercepted pass looked to have gifted Taunton a certain score – until Atkinson caught the Taunton flier from behind, hauling him down just short of the line. In an almost exact replay of their first try, Taunton chipped over and scored under the sticks for a 7 pointer. Skipper Mitch Spencer kicked the hosts back into Taunton territory, from a maul hooker Sam Harrison was the link man, putting fly half Jack Fairs away for an unconverted try, just on half time, to bring the score back to 10 – 12 to Taunton.
Taunton would have hoped to turn around with more than a 2 point lead, they needn’t have worried though as some weak tackling allowed Taunton a further score straight after the interval, to open a 9 point lead. The hosts knuckled down, playing some good rugby, however time and again the last pass went to ground, or possession was coughed up in the tackle. N&B were camped on the Taunton line, hammering away until flanker Elliott Cheesright crashed over from a tap penalty to bring the scores within 4 points. Now the hosts threw everything at Taunton, flyer Atkinson was for once well shackled by the Taunton defence, and the visitors held out for a well deserved win.
