6 Apr 2008 - Tor under-eights 9 (tries) – Nailsea & Backwell under-eights 14 (tries)
Nailsea’s under eights once again proved themselves too strong for local opposition, with stunning pace in attack and the vision to exploit gaps in the opposition’s defence, scoring a record fourteen tries, and in follow up match won by eight tries to six.
Man of the match Joel Giltrow scored five tries in this first match, with a directness of running that left Tor for gasping. Will O’Malley joined the score-sheet with four mazy tries, and Joe Sharps gave tight support and touched down twice. Ben Brown who is getting faster every week, sold an audacious dummy to touch down in the corner.
But whilst this squad have grown accustomed to seeing these aforementioned fast-boys claim all the applause, this week it was unsung heroes Ben Morris and Sam Williams who matched them for pace and effort, and who were each rewarded with fine tries that showed direct running and maturity, bringing the travelling supporters to their feet. And in defence, Ben Cleeve popped up everywhere to make crucial tackles. The follow up match, which Nailsea won eight tries to six, saw Ben Brown collect loose ball in Nailsea’s own goal line and evade defenders to dash the length of the pitch to score the first of two tries. Sam Williams demonstrated how to dive on loose ball, and was able to recover and dart in for the first of his two tries in his game. Joel Giltrow added two tries to make his tally of seven for the morning, and there were also tries for Joe Sharps and Ben Morris.
This little squad appear unstoppable on mornings like this. In practice sessions they are mastering-well the art of full contact and tackling, and this points to some successful seasons to come. Nailsea will need to learn to run straighter and start using the support of the boys at their shoulder, but nothing should take away from today’s dazzling performance.
