Nailsea & Backwell 1st XV 49 Gordano 1st XV 29

A tremendous game of rugby as these two sides both with aspirations to go up this season played some good, some not so good rugby on a very hot afternoon.

Nailsea just coming out on top.  A Nailsea side without a number of key individuals worked really hard in the first half to counter the Gordano pressure and as it happened the pressure was all on Gordano as they gave away numerous penalties for silly things and this was to be their undoing.  The home forwards worked hard and the set pieces were excellent. The star of the afternoon Mike Lowis kicked five penalties to make it 15 – 0 at half time.  It should have been more really and if chances were taken the score could have been thirty points.  Two golden opportunities were missed out wide to score tries.

The second half saw Gordano score early and come back into the game.  The next score was important and usual wing forward Tom Crossman today covering on the wing went outside his man to score a fine try from the half way line.  The game then became a nail biter as Gordano pushed hard to get back on level terms courtesy of some poor midfield defence on two occasions by the home side.  Gordano then started to kick the ball to man of the match Lowis who gladly returned the ball with interest on each occasion.  Lowis went onto score two tries and Crossman added another virtually doing the same as he had first time. Rob Baker was the other scorer getting two tries one a great run in from half way and the other a sloppy Gordano pass was intercepted from thirty metres out.  Lowis added two conversions.

An excellent local derby.  No doubt we all look forward to the away game.
