Nailsea and Backwell 3rd team Allstars 22 - Guys Hospital "Stag Team" 17
A trickier outing for the Allstars this week against a team from Guys Hospital. Included in the line-up this week was the mighty Ian Spiller, who made the best come back since Lazarus with his presence and unequivocal intent. Welcome back, Spills! Steve Rollins, Ross Parsons, Adrian Knighton, Clive Bowman, Martin Pratt and Darren Chidzey to name a few of the others.
This was a close game and the Allstars opened the scoring through new boy Rob Midsummer, who outpaced everyone, including his support, (the majority of us ARE over 35 Rob!), to touchdown under the posts. The second came form an off-load from Nigel Weston, who took off like a charging rhino before passing to scrum-half Jamie Sullivan, who touched down.
The second half saw a few changes, and, playing up the slope, the Allstars conceded three tries, and things looked shaky, but, young Jamie Sullivan took a ball deep in his own half and showed contempt for the opposition by outpacing them all uphill and scoring his second.
The final try was down to Sir Phil "Will Carling" Quinn, who took a pass, beat one, sold more dummies than Mothercare, barged another out of the way, before touching down, for what HAS to be one of the finest tries the West End faithfull has ever seen. Outstanding from the third team stalwart.
Special mention must go to Nigel Crawley, who's tackling at fullback was a sight to behold, Dave Grigg, who's new boots were a sight to behold, Clive Bowman for producing Britains entry for the World Whinging Championship, Nick Matson and Tony "Geordie" Smith for a fine tackling display, Dave Kirk for arranging the fixture, Pete Reakes for refereeing, (it was NEVER a foward pass, Pete!), and, finally, Matt Lacy for getting the Allstars together again.
