21 Oct 2007 - Despite errors, Nailsea win comfortably
Right then, onto the Match.......
Once again coach mark Hawkes was forced to make changes which continue to highlight the depth of this ever improving squad.
Late call ups to Tony Perfect ( Making his return after over a year) and Jay Ford and with Justin Seidle being absent for this week meant the back row shuffled with Jack Quick at openside, Richard palmer at number 8 and Tony Perfect in at 6. Pete Reakes returned to the second row this week whilst the Front row of Hooper, Kemp and Smith remained unchanged.
In the Backs Ben Hawkins came into scrum half to replace Dan Goodman and the young and Impressive Scott Davey returned to the side once again to replace Matt Watkins, Scott Goodall returned to partner Alex Blackwell in the centres after 2 weeks out and the ever reliable Paul Stephens returned to Fly Half.
Captain Mark Hooper is clearly the best "tosser" in the league and once again won this all important first battle and opted for his team to play up the slope. Within minutes Nailsea won good line out ball and drove over the line with Richard Palmer emerging from the bundle with the ball in hand and that big cheesy smile, 5 - 0 Nailsea. It wasn't long after that when in a similar Fashion Bradley "the pidge" Kemp got the first of his tries, 10 - 0. Some unfortunate handling errors and the frustrating inability Nailsea showed to get the ball wide resulted in many knock on's and general errors which really played into the hands of Crewkerne, who demonstrated some powerful and impressive forward play all day long.
From another line out, Captain Mark Hooper claimed the ball at the back of the lineout to crash over the white line. 15 - 0.
With Nailsea still playing into Crewkerne's strengths , centre Scott Goodall managed to chip the defence and turn the full back, who, with some strange defending kicked the ball into the path of the chasing Palmer and Goodall, Palmer collected the ball and produced an offload of the highest quality to enable Goodall to literally collapse over the line 20 - 0.
In terms of where the space on the pitch was, the next try was made from simple basic rugby, 3 good phases from the forwards allowed the ball to be spread through the hands for Tom Morris to cut a straight line into the space and outpace the full back to score from 35 yards out. Converted 27 - 0
Half Time
Nailsea now playing down the slope didn't really help them to play running rugby and unfortunately for all the players and the fans, they couldn't stop the error count which really prevented them from playing the rugby they know they are capable of. Credit must go to Crewkerne who played there part in putting Nailsea under allot of pressure at the breakdown, they just didn't capitalise on the errors as well as Nailsea did to them.
From a Mall down in the bottom corner the Nailsea forwards once again managed to push the defence over the line with Bradley Kemp claiming his second of the match, 32 - 0.
Kemp then completed his hat-trick of tries after some good running by Ian Ogbourne saw him held up just short of the line, 2 quick passes out of the ruck enabled Kemp (who was resting out with the backs) to belly flop over the line for his well deserved third. Converted, 39 - 0.
Crewkerne replied with a penalty in front of the posts and if I'm honest, the second half did not produce great amounts of Rugby worthwhile of mentioning.
In snippets, Nailsea looked to show the form they are capable of and some special mentions must go once again to young wing Scott Davey, who every time he got the ball attacked the opposition with confidence, pace and skill. Ben Hawkins had a fine display in his first start at scrum half with Tony Perfect and Jay Ford also showing why they were given their call ups.
With no man of the match given this week I would like to award it to the Referee, I thought he managed this game very well and as we are all quick to question referees when we think they are wrong, I thought I would break the mould and give credit where it's due and can only hope we are refereed in this manner all season long!!!!
Final Score 39 - 3
Tries, Pidge (3) Hooper, Palmer, Morris, Goodall
Cons: Stephens (2)
Pens: Crewkerne (1)

Captain "Pink Panthers" weekly quote.
"Last week saw the youth policy come good, this week the "dads army" did what England couldn't"
Suicide Watch
Coach Mark Hawkes was remarkably calm in the post match debrief and disappeared immediately following the game after informing us he would be away for this week and next weeks game at Combe Down, after some research it appears that we can fear the worse. Please see below definition of "suicide watch" to explain his whereabouts.
"Suicide watch is an intensive monitoring process used to ensure that an individual does not commit suicide. Usually the term is used in reference to inmates in a prison or psychiatric hospital. Individuals are placed on suicide watch when it is believed there is a good chance they will attempt to harm themselves"
What happens to people under suicide watch?
"People under suicide watch are put into an environment where it would be difficult for them to hurt themselves. They may be placed in a special padded cell and be stripped of anything with which they might hurt themselves (including shoelaces and belt, and sometimes even bed sheets). They may be under continuous or very frequent watch of a guard (a prison officer or orderly) who will intervene if they attempt to harm themselves"
So, I am positive Mark will return to the club after 7 days treatment and look forward to seeing him next Tuesday!
