4 Nov 2007 - Nailsea v's Bristol Barbarians

A disappointing performance from a Nailsea side who on the day were well beaten by a stronger more aggressive, better Bararians pack. Add to this an inability to get the ball wide quickly, create phases anywhere other than close to the Barbarians breakdown and not being able to catch the ball at vital times, the result was going to be as it was, A loss.
Nailsea didn?t really seem to know how to respond to the tactics of the Barabarians who ran out deserved winners.
Nailsea then added to their misery by missing vital tackles and generally being to nice at the rucks and on occasions chatting to their opponents !
Overall there was a lack of good decision making and a lot of lateral movement from the backs. In a game which was there to be won if the right game was played.
The half backs struggled to give quick ball and often space was closed down by a lack of good decision making and the desire to take the ball into contact. It was interesting to see the responses and attitudes of players to their first defeat of the season.
It is always very easy to look for excuses and blame others however collectively this was a poor on field display and an inability to change the way the game needed to be played showed a lack of game understanding on occasions.
There is no doubt this group of players have lots of ability however when the pressure is on, the group need to work a lot smarter and not a lot harder.
The coach was very disappointed with this display however it may refocus one or two individuals on how important the team is and how as a group they need to play to their strengths each week depending on the opposition put in front of them.
It was positive to see Nathan Dowling looking confident at fullback and the raw talent of Mickey Watkins on the wing who will be a better player for the experience, one of his tackles probably being the highlight of the match.
Even Matt Stone being asked late on to come into the squad and making an impact when asked to give 20minutes. Stone makes a difference to the attacking options of the team.
It may not have been a bad thing to have this kick up the backside and there may have been a feeling quietly from within the club that it had been coming. However, more importantly now is the way the team react and build for the next game.
Lets all look forward to Old Culverhaysians at home next weekend and lets see how good this group of players are ?

On a more positive note, The club held it's annual Bonfire and fireworks on Saturday evening and another successful event it was, The club is one of the only locations in Nailsea that consistently throughout the year provides events for the whole community and unlike other sporting clubs does not only hold events that are specific to their own interests. Nailsea and Backwell Rugby Club support and raise allot of money for charity, houses 300 children every weekend, runs events like bonfire night, the beer festival, family days, summer fun days, hosts local skittles leagues throughout the year, Holds annual football tournaments for local children, allows charities to host fire walking in aid of MS, Allows a running club, Hockey club and Boxing club to use the facilities for their groups and most of all prides itself as a "club for the community", it is a shame therfore to find out that once again the "door knockers" were out in force on Sunday morning asking local residents to oppose any applications to extend our license by just one hour. As a Nailsea resident I am hard pushed to find any other organisation or location within the village that does more for the community each year, yet there are still people that want to see the clubs facilities restricted, we can appreciate our neighbours point of view but find it difficult to understand why some people feel the need to push others against the club when, as a non profit making organisation all we do is try to provide a place where people young or old, able or disabled, Rugby or football, Boxing or running, Fireworks or Beer festival can come along and be part of the "whole community"

Nailsea and Backwell rugby club do allot for the village and should be rewarded for this, not hindered.

Captains Quote, Statto News and Suicide Watch will commence again next week.
