3 Nov 2007 - Nailsea U17's 14 V's Winscombe 10

In perfect conditions, the Ravens elected to play up the slope in this Somerset Cup quarter final. The first half was well contested, featuring plenty of hard running and big tackles from both sides. The visitors fielded a big pack, however the well drilled Ravens forwards more than held their own in the loose and tight. The Winscombe backs always looked dangerous, with the Ravens back 3 working overtime to contain the threat. Half time arrived with the scores tied at nil nil, and the Ravens looking forward to playing down the slope, and hopefully dominating territorially.

Rather than put boot to ball, the Ravens tried to run out of defence and were punished when Winscombe intercepted and touched down under the posts, the easy conversion being missed, to take a 0 ? 5 lead. The Ravens responded with a spell of sustained pressure, hammering the Winscombe line until flanker Greg Want forced himself over after a 5 metre scrum, converted by centre Marcus Tanner to give the home side a 7 ? 5 lead. Next came a contender for ?try of the season?, with the ball spun down the line at real pace, Tanner?s break was carried on by Trinick whose well timed pass allowed winger Laurence Townsend to cut inside and touch down under the sticks for a superb converted try, 14 ? 5 to the Ravens.

Winscombe came back strongly, good passing and pace out wide resulted in a fine score, the easy conversion attempt once again hoofed wide, to leave the home side 14 ? 10 ahead. The Ravens supporters then had to endure an uncomfortable final 10 minutes as the home side contrived to put themselves under all kinds of unnecessary pressure, before the final whistle sounded.

So, through to the next round, and some good passages of play and individual performances, however the squad know they need to step up the concentration and intensity to progress further.

Tries: Want, Tanner

Conversions: Tanner 2
