13 Nov 2007 - Nailsea 22 V's Old Culverhasiians 17
Nailsea 22 Old Culverhasians 17
West End Park November 10th 2007
After last weeks defeat, Coach Hawkes asked his players to respond in the best possible fashion, with a win and his squad duly noted this request.
Only one change was required to the squad this week and that was due to injury, Captain Super Dooper Pooper Scooper Trooper 'wishes he had bupa' Hooper was replaced by former club captain Simon Ford, who I know many were pleased to see him representing the first XV once again. Young Robert Lee came onto the bench once more as front row replacement (Rob has come up through the ranks of the club and once he has gained some valuable experience at senior level am sure he will be one to watch in the near future, Darren Chidzey also returned to the squad after a long lay off with Injury (good to see you back Darren).
Right then, onto the Rugby....
Justin Seidle was asked to captain the side this week and proved immediately that his "tossing" skills were not up to Hoopers normal standards. Nailsea were asked to play down the slope first half and wow.....what a start they made.
"The first twenty minutes, dare I say, was possibly the best start we have had had all season" said second row Ian Ogbourne in a post match interview.
Nailsea attacked Old C's in Numbers, with support and looked impressive, hence why it was not long before Bradley Kemp picked a superb line off the centres to score under the posts, Converted by Stephens.
A missed penalty by Stephens didn't rattle Nailsea and soon after, at an opposition scrum Man of the match Richard Palmer pounced on the ball that escaped from the scrum and rounded the winger to score in the corner, conversion missed 12 - 0.
Nailsea then appeared to start playing panic rugby and concentration levels dropped which resulted in the home side making errors and losing territory. As a result of this Old C's had the opportunity to close the gap with two penalties, which they just missed, they did however respond with a converted try and a penalty which was cancelled out by a Paul Stephens attempt making the score 15-10.
On 28 minutes and with another Old C's attack, Centre Scott Goodall was dubiously yellow carded for holding back a player which then meant the Nailsea defence was to be tested, Jack Quick and Dicky Palmer tackled hard all day and credit must go to the 14 men who kept Old C's at bay for the remainder of the half.
Half Time Nailsea 12 Old Culverhasians 10
After some strong, no holes barred words from Coach hawkes at Half Time, Nailsea were aware that anything short of a gutsy level headed performance would result in them losing the top of the table spot to their opposition or Burnham On Sea.
Nailsea played this half well and in fairness, Old C's showed why they are fighting it out at the top with us, their open side flanker and number 14 certainly deserve a mention. If Old C's had played the slope correctly I think the result may have gone a different way, however, they did not and it was Nailsea who looked the more dangerous side.
After a few phases and looking like they had been held up short of the line, Pidge Kemp somehow managed to pick up and find the line (I put it down to pigeon instinct, he must have seen some bread crumbs over the try line!) for his second of the match, converted by Stephens, 22 - 10.
Rob Lee and Darren Chidzey were then introduced to the field for Geordy Smith and Pete Reakes respectively and Nathan Dowling had to be replaced after making a brave tackle as the last line of defence.
With Alex Blackwell, Dicky Palmer, Jack Quick and Justin Seidle all finishing the game with some kind of injury it really showed that this side came back this week and proved that they do "want to win" games and are prepared to fight it out to get them.
There was still some time for a little pressure and excitement for the supporters, sponsors and Vice presidents who had filled the balcony, as Old C's fought themselves to within 5 points after scoring a converted try and this ensured the game was tight and tense for the remaining 4 or 5 mins.
Nailsea held their composure and took the victory; it will be a close game when we travel to them for the return fixture in 3 weeks time.
Some notable performances from Simon Ford, Bradley Kemp, Jack Quick and Dicky Palmer and a special mention for stand in Captain Justin Seidle who cut, battered and bruised, taped up and soldiered on for his team, to quote the coach at full time "if the whole team could play with the kind of heart Justin showed, we would be a better team for it?.
Final Score 22 - 17

Captain Seidles Quote
After last weeks loss, the first of the season, it was critical that the first 15 returned quickly to winning ways to maintain league position, allay any self doubt and send out the right message to the rest of the division. This performance ticked all the boxes for me and should be the foundation to go forward and dominate the league as we should.
Suicide Watch
Suicide watch was called off after last weeks defeat for obvious reasons and there is a new concern within the camp, The opposing coach approached our physio this week and asked if she was trained in dealing with heart failures as our coach appeared to be close to having one, therefore we now move on to our new feature???????.
Marks Massive Murmurs
Hawkseys Heart rictor scale is from 1 to 10 (10 being a nuclear explosion and earthquake at the same time)
The top three murmurs of this week??
In third place - Mark registered a 5.4 After a Blackwell dropped pass on 10 mins
In Second - An impressive 6.9 was registered when Jack Quick failed to defend the tail of a lineout.
This week's winner of Marks Massive Murmurs is when at half time a worrying 8.7 was registered by the coach after someone responded to a question from the skipper!!!!!! (Thanks again Justin!!!!!)
To give you an idea of the devastation that can be caused by an 8.7, see external file attached at the very bottom of this wep page for proof of what happens if Mark goes over a 9. be afraid, be very afraid!!!
Statto News

Top Try Scorer (Cup Tries) - Alex Blackwell (2)
Top Try Scorers (Overall) - Alex Blackwell + Dicky palmer (8)
