17 Nov 2007 - BAC 13 - Nailsea and Backwell 5
A poor result reflected the way in which Nailsea played and full marks to a strong BAC front five who really showed their counterparts the way to scrimmage and keep ball.
Nailsea' s inability to identify the need to play phases was highlighted again.
The day started badly with key players not being available through injury or lethargy and so it was that Nailsea who without doubt could of progressed in this trophy fell to pieces.
There is an element of 'Cant be bothered when things aren't going well' and combine this with an inability to adapt to what is in front of them the result looked a formality early on. The positives were few and far between however had it not been for Scott Goodall in broken play on a number of occasions the score would have been greater in favour of BAC.
Mickey Watkins and Scott Davie both looked sharp on the rare occasions they got the ball . When both have the experience of a few more games they will be threats to all that come up against them.
Overall Nailsea were the authors of their own doom. Forwards were collectively lazy and their rucking was very poor. Out-behind, the backs were far too flat; no-depth was a huge problem for them. If 10 stands flat, 12 has to think about where he stands. Two flat passes unless they are of international quality usually means even the slowest defence is in your face. This in turn restricts what you can do with the ball.
When they got it right it was too late. Watkins finished a strong run well to score in the corner. A few harsh words were said by the coach at the end of the game. Did they sink in? Let's wait until the next time to see. There is a need for players to realise that they don't need to take things personally and realise this game is about the team and not the individual.
Man of the match - Scott Goodall
