18 Nov 2007 - Nailsea Nil - Winscombe 29

What a difference a day makes. Positivity, a willingness to play by all who were asked and all who could.

Injuries from Saturday and the previous week were no excuse but made a difference and so it was that 17 guys who all wanted to be there took on Winscombe in the Somerset Vase.

Nailsea never gave up in this one and scrummaged well. Overall they were consigned to defeat really, by three errors or bad decisions - whatever you would like to call them -by players.

It was clear that probably ten man rugby was the way forward but a couple of well picked lines in the centre from Jack Quack and Scott Farrer which, if they had had a little bit of support would or could of resulted in a try, were relative breaths of fresh air.

The rucking was better although they struggled to generate quick ball. The depth was better in the backs. Paul Stephens battled his way through the game with a dead leg. The tenacity of the back row of Ford, Perfect and Palmer reflected in the way Winscombe struggled to come around the base of the breakdowns and attack off the base of the scrum.

The lineouts worked well and were probably the area where most turnovers came for Nailsea. It was just that lack of ability to finish or just keep the ball for one more phase instead of passing it , which eventually saw Nailsea lose to a big strong Winscombe unit who will no-doubt do very well in this competition.

A big thank you to those who played and the desire to play was clear to see from a much changed starting line up to what we have been used to. It's nice to know you care and that was demonstrated in the best possible way by playing for each other.

We have now played the top of the premier league. Do you fancy it?
