22 Dec 2007 - Nailsea & Backwell 2nds (Gillard's Gladiators) 19 Oldfield Old Boys 3rds 7

A glorious winters day and the gladiators continued with their impressive home form. Oldfield, who arrived late, were instantly put under pressure with Nailsea winning the toss and using the slope. Straight from the kick off Oldfield kicked straight to Freddie Le Ouedec, whose very impressive catch and 50 metre run set out Nailsea's intentions from the start.

With a strong drive from the forwards and some good running from Nailsea's back line the Gladiators soon worked an opening in which Stitch scored crossing the line from 5 metres out. Nailsea continued with the pressure and Oldfield soon found themselvees pinned in their own half.

Nailsea continued to mix up their play with some good running from the backs and some good phase play and support to allow Jason Patch to cross in the corner and a fantastic touchline converstion from the ever impressive Tom Campbell.

Nailsea continued turning the screw and with some good rucking work Sam Kew picked up from the base and a smart interpass between himself and Freddie allowed Sam to cross over from 5 metres for a converted try. With the ever impressive Nailsea roar from their very vocal and well supported crowd, Nailsea continued and with some fantastic touchline tackling the score was kept to just 19-0 at halftime.

Oldfield started the second half the brighter of the two sides. They pinned Nailsea into their half and soon found themselvees testing Nailsea defensive line hard and finally after 10 minutes of intense pressure they crossed Nailsea's line and duly converted.

Despite the large amount of possesion that Oldfield had, Nailsea's strong defensive line held firm and some excellent counter rucking and high pressure tackling meant Oldfield never threatened to breach Nailsea's 22 again.

Even with Nailsea bringing on a number of subs Nailsea continued to knock Oldfield back Nailsea were very unlucky not to add to their score in the second half , pinning Oldfield once again into their half but the referee bought the match to a slightly premature end due to fading light

Nailsea finish the year on a well worked and a very positive performance. Special mention to Nailsea's back row forwards of Tom Crossman, Chris Webber and Man of the match Freddie Le Ouedec.
